Part 2: The Unspoken Bond

Part 2: The Unspoken Bond

Part 3: The Secret Promise

I stood frozen in the cold wind, the anger draining out of me so fast it left me lightheaded.

“I didn’t know,” I whispered, the words barely catching in my throat.

“Nobody did,” Marcus replied. “She never asked for credit. But six months before Emily fell sick herself, she made a promise to me. I was spiraling after Lily died—drinking, driving recklessly, ready to end it all. Emily found me sitting on my bike in the hospital parking lot one night and pulled the keys right out of the ignition.”

He let out a dry, breathy laugh at the memory.

“She told me: ‘Marcus, you carry Lily’s light now. If you give up, her story ends. Promise me you’ll stay alive.’ She made me promise to pick up one healthy habit, to keep living. I told her I’d ride my Harley every week to a peaceful place just to talk to Lily and keep my head straight.”

Marcus reached out, resting his palm on the cool stone once more.

“Then I found out Emily passed away. I couldn’t bear the thought of her lying here alone without someone coming to thank her for saving my life. So, every Saturday at 2:00 PM, I ride out here. I tell Lily about my week. And then I tell Emily that I’m still keeping my promise.”
