I hesitated, unsure of how to approach the subject. “Lily, you know you can tell me anything, right? If something’s bothering you, or if you need to talk, I’m here.”
She nodded but didn’t say anything.
I took a deep breath. “Is there anything you want to tell me about today? About the dentist or… anything else?”
Lily glanced at me, her eyes wide and searching. “Mom, are we in trouble?”
Her question caught me off guard. “No, sweetheart, we’re not in trouble. But I want to make sure you’re okay. It’s important to me.”
She was quiet for a moment, then whispered, “I just don’t like it when Daniel gets mad. He’s different when you’re not around.”
