“Can we talk?”
“Not really.”
He swallowed hard.
“I just wanted to say I’m sorry.”
I looked at him for several seconds.
Then I asked quietly:
“For what?”
He blinked.
“What?”
“For lying?”
I took a step closer.
“For cheating?”
Another step.
“For humiliating me?”
His eyes dropped.
“For stealing from your company?”
I shook my head.
“Or are you sorry because you got caught?”
Ryan opened his mouth.
No words came out.
Because we both knew the answer.
Finally, I said the thing I’d wanted him to understand for years.
“Don’t apologize because you lost everything.”
He looked up.
“Apologize to yourself for believing that hurting a good woman somehow made you a bigger man.”
