“You took her without telling me.”
“I took her to a doctor.”
“You should have called me.”
“I did not know if you would protect her.”
That landed.
Hard.
His mouth tightened.
Diane began crying louder.
“She’s turning you against me, Andrés. She’s always hated me. I came to help and now she’s accusing me of poisoning my own granddaughter.”
Emma lifted her head.
Her voice was small.
“You said the pills made me quiet.”
The lobby went silent.
Diane froze.
I felt Emma realize everyone had heard her.
She started shaking.
I kissed her hair.
“You did good. You did so good.”
The older officer stepped toward Diane.
“Ma’am, we need you to come outside and speak with us.”
Diane clutched Andrés’s sleeve.
“No. I’m not leaving my granddaughter with that woman.”
That woman.
Not her mother.
That woman.
