“Tell her she can’t take this house!”
“Put me on speaker,” I said.
A pause.
Then Evelyn spat insults through the phone.
I listened patiently.
Finally, I interrupted.
“The mansion belongs to me. Legally.”
Silence.
Then Daniel whispered:
“That’s impossible.”
“No,” I said. “What’s impossible is pretending you built a life using someone else’s money.”
The eviction notice arrived the next morning.
I returned with Marissa, two police officers, a locksmith, and the property manager.
Daniel opened the door looking exhausted.
“You can’t come in here.”
Marissa handed him the paperwork.
“Actually, she can.”
Evelyn appeared behind him.
“This is harassment!”
“No,” I said.
“Harassment was insulting me for years. Assault was your son slapping me. Fraud was spending my money while convincing everyone I contributed nothing.”
Daniel glanced at the officers.
