Claire looked at Hannah, then at Grace.
“Because Hannah found me before Grace was born.”
My head turned.
Hannah closed her eyes briefly.
Claire continued. “She wanted to understand what happened with my mother. She said Trevor had told her there had been bitterness and misunderstandings. She did not come looking for revenge. She came looking for truth.”
I could barely breathe.
“When Grace was born,” Claire said, “Hannah sent me a photograph. She said she hoped Trevor would become the father he had not been able to be for me.”
The judge listened without expression.
“And after Grace was born?” Margaret asked.
