I’ll never forget how they laughed as that truck tore out of the gas station. It wasn’t just a joke to them, it was pure evil, the kind of laugh that gets stuck in your head for days.
Dust flew up everywhere as they sped off down the empty highway, leaving me standing there in the scorching heat.
“Kyle!” I yelled, running a few steps after the truck. “Kyle, wait!”
He didn’t even tap the brakes. He just laughed harder. His brothers, Brad and Chase, were hanging out the windows hanging their phones out to film me.
“Good luck, Lena!” Chase yelled back. “You’ve got about three hundred miles to walk!”
A split second after that, the truck vanished from sight, leaving me standing alone next to a nearly empty gas station right in the middle of nowhere. I didn’t have my purse because it was in the truck. Nor did I have my wallet; it was also in the truck. No money, no water, and no means of getting home.

The sad thing about this is that I only entered the gas station because Kyle said he couldn’t be bothered to buy an energy drink for himself. I was only trying to be a good wife, but got left behind in the middle of nowhere by my own husband under the hot sun while he and his brothers made my panic their joy.
